TL;DR

  • * Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills are actively seeking defensive linemen before the trade deadline.
  • * The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly willing to trade defensive lineman Mazi Smith.
  • * Both Chiefs and Bills have defensive line depth issues due to injuries and need for reinforcements.
  • * Mazi Smith, a former first-round pick, has seen limited playing time this season.

Reports indicate the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills are seeking a defensive lineman before the trade deadline, with the Dallas Cowboys rumored to have such a player available.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports reported that the Chiefs "are in the market for a defensive tackle" and the Bills "could add on the defensive line with Ed Oliver out indefinitely."

The Cowboys' former first-round defensive lineman, Mazi Smith, is reportedly available for trade, making him a potential target for either team seeking additional depth.

"Dallas also appears to be open to trading 2023 first-round DT Mazi Smith, who has only played in five games this season," Rapoport wrote.

The Chiefs have recently reacquired Mike Pennel to join Chris Jones, though it's clear the team needs additional depth beyond this duo.

Beyond Oliver, the Bills are facing other offensive line injuries. T.J. Sanders and DeWayne Carter are on injured reserve, along with DaQuan Jones, are expected to be sidelined due to a calf injury miss his second consecutive game.

Selected by The Cowboys in the first round of the 2023 draft, Smith has fallen far short of what was anticipated.

Smith, who participated in every game during his initial two NFL seasons, has only appeared in five games this current season, with the rest seeing him as a healthy scratch.

The Chiefs and Bills would undoubtedly prefer a more reliable choice than Smith, who has a greater probability of faltering than achieving success.

Should trade market options be limited, it wouldn't be unreasonable to consider acquiring a young player for a seventh-round pick, or potentially even just a seventh-round pick swap.
