ESPN insider expects Chiefs' Matt Nagy to be prime candidate for AFC head coaching job image

Matt Nagy has been the offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs since the 2023 season, and though the team's offense has struggled this year, it sounds like the experienced offensive mind is going to be a prime candidate for a vacant head coaching job in the AFC.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Nagy is expected to be a candidate for the Tennessee Titans head coaching job this offseason. Tennessee's general manager, Mike Borgonzi, worked with Nagy in Kansas City for nearly a decade.

"The Matt Nagy-Titans connection is one that comes up in league circles, with the belief that Tennessee general manager Mike Borgonzi has a good relationship with Nagy from their Kansas City days. The Chiefs' struggles could affect Nagy's chances. But I expect him to be a candidate in Tennessee," Fowler wrote.

The Titans fired Brian Callahan as head coach after a 1-5 start to the 2025 campaign and a 3-14 record in 2024. Mike McCoy has since taken over as the interim, but it's incredibly unlikely he'll keep the job.

Nagy spent four seasons as the Chicago Bears' head coach from 2018 to 2021, posting a 48-55 record, including an NFC North title in 2018 and two playoff appearances. The 47-year-old also won the AP Coach of the Year award in 2018, but was eventually fired by Chicago at the end of the 2022 season.

Hiring a candidate with head coaching experience, like Nagy, could be a primary focus for the Titans during their coaching search. However, Nagy would be a dull hire, as he's clearly better suited as an assistant, and his tenure with the Bears ended very poorly.

Overall, Nagy is a solid option to be the next head coach of the Titans, but there will be more qualified candidates on the market who can give the franchise a higher ceiling. Nagy should look to remain in Kansas City with Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes rather than chase head coaching opportunities.
