The Kansas City Chiefs needed some quarterback depth.

They found it with the Buffalo Bills.

On Monday, the Chiefs signed QB Shane Buechele from the Bills' practice squad. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the transaction.

Buechele, a former college star at SMU, also spent parts of the 2021 and 2022 seasons with the Chiefs.

He was, in essence, the No. 3 QB in Buffalo, behind Josh Allen and Mitchell Trubisky. He won that job in the preseason over Mike White.

The Chiefs were in dire need of another quarterback. They lost Patrick Mahomes in Week 15 to a torn ACL. In Week 16, Gardner Minshew started but left the game with his own knee injury.

Schefter reported Monday that Minshew's ACL is intact but that he'll miss time.

The only QB left was Chris Oladokun. He finished out Sunday's loss to the Titans.

Kansas City doesn't have much time to get the quarterbacks ready this week. They play on Christmas, which is Thursday, against the Denver Broncos.

Oladokun probably has to start by default, but Buechele's familiarity with Andy Reid's system from the past will help his cause.

It's not a spot the Chiefs imagined themselves being in, but they're just dealing with the hand they've been dealt at this point.
