The Kansas City Chiefs' running game was never good enough this season.
It's not the only reason they're officially eliminated from the playoffs with three weeks to spare, but it didn't help.
That might explain why before their Week 16 matchup with the Titans, the Chiefs have made a pair of RB roster moves.
First, they've signed Dameon Pierce to their active roster from the practice squad. Pierce was once a promising young back for the Houston Texans, but he couldn't continue his momentum there.
To make room for Pierce, the Chiefs have waived Elijah Mitchell. Kansas City brought Mitchell in from the San Francisco 49ers in the offseason, but Mitchell never was given much of a chance at all.

The Chiefs still have Kareem Hunt and Isiah Pacheco at the top of the RB depth chart. Hunt has received a lot of volume and compiled some decent counting stats, but his efficiency hasn't been great. Pacheco continues to not quite be the same back he was before his broken leg.
Kansas City's RB of the future likely isn't on the roster, but giving Pierce a shot has some logic. He legitimately looked like a long-term starter when he was a rookie with the Texans.
Just because Pierce didn't stick there doesn't mean he couldn't figure it out in a new abode.
Pierce is also a solid return man, so the Chiefs could try him out in that role, too. For Pierce, it's a chance to extend his NFL career, and potentially to earn himself a spot to help the Chiefs bounce back next season.
