Chiefs' rare top-10 draft pick presents 'alluring' RB solution image

The Kansas City Chiefs are in an unusual position, picking No. 9 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft.

That's what happens after a nightmare 6-11 season, and now the Chiefs find themselves with a lot of options.

One of the places the Chiefs know they have to get better is running back. With no gamechangers in the backfield, life has been even tougher on Patrick Mahomes.

With the ninth pick, there's a chance the Chiefs will be able to target the top RB on the board, Jeremiyah Love out of Notre Dame.

Is that worth it? It could be, but ESPN's Nate Taylor pushed back in a new article on Wednesday.

"Boy, this is such an alluring option," Taylor begins. "The Chiefs desperately need to upgrade their rushing attack, and Love has demonstrated dynamic playmaking ability."

Taylor just doesn't think it's the best use of resources, though.

"The better option, though, is for Kansas City to prioritize whomever is the best pass rusher available with this pick," Taylor writes. "The Chiefs' pass rush was a liability in 2025 (tied for 22nd with 35 total sacks) and defensive tackle Chris Jones will turn 31 this summer. Another capable player next to Jones and George Karlaftis is more necessary than selecting Love."

One key note here is the timeline of the offseason. Free agency will already be pretty much resolved by the time the draft arrives.

So if the Chiefs sign a guy like Breece Hall as a free agent, then clearly they wouldn't need Love anymore.

If Kansas City strikes out on the main running backs in free agency, though, don't be surprised if they circle back around to Love. He's certainly a special talent.
