Are the Chiefs out of the playoffs? Explaining elimination scenarios for Kansas City with 6-7 record image

The Kansas City Chiefs have been the NFL's preeminent team for a decade.

This season? They're 6-7.

No, not the meme. That's their record. It's the most losses they've ever had in a regular season with Patrick Mahomes at quarterback.

They fell to that record with a loss Sunday night to the Houston Texans, and it puts their playoff hopes in dire straits.

Are the Chiefs out of the playoffs?

As things stand, the Chiefs would miss the playoffs if they started today. But they aren't yet eliminated entirely.

Kansas City has four games still to play. At this point, the Chiefs' likely only chance at all is to win all four of those games.

The Chiefs sit 10th in the AFC as it stands, and only seven teams make the postseason (four division winners and three wild cards).

Kansas City officially cannot win the AFC West, so it's chasing a wild card spot.

There are multiple teams for the Chiefs to leapfrog just to get on the doorstep, and then they'll still need slip-ups from some of the teams above them, too.

The Chiefs host the Chargers in Week 15. Then it's a trip to Tennessee to take on the lowly Titans in Week 16, followed by a home game against the Broncos in Week 17 and a visit to the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 18.

There are a few very winnable games there and a couple challenging ones. Kansas City can't afford to lose again, because that would be as good as the final nail in the coffin.
