The Kansas City Chiefs are in hot water. At 5-5, they are a game behind the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC playoff race for the final wild card spot. That margin is practically two games, though, because the Jaguars hold the head-to-head advantage over the Chiefs. Considering Kansas City is also four games behind the Denver Broncos in the AFC West, the wild card is the best logical path for the reigning AFC Champions to get to the postseason.
Speaking to the media in his weekly press conference, head coach Andy Reid emphasized taking care of the small things in order for the big picture to come together.
"You've got to take care of the small things," Reid said. "Why are we having the penalties? Then, let's fix that. Don't point to the officials. Don't point here or there. Take responsibility for it."
Reid continued by saying the small mistakes that Kansas City can control are the things that are hurting them the most.
"All those things [we] control," Reid said. [They're] small things, but they all add up."
The Chiefs have three games this season with 10 or more penalties, which certainly hurt them in the loss to the Broncos. Whether it's the seemingly weekly illegal formation call on Jawaan Taylor for lining up too far back, or holding calls that negate big completions, the Chiefs hurt themselves a ton in Week 11. That's not to take anything away from the Broncos and their win, but the Chiefs have shot themselves in the foot a lot in 2025, and that has had a direct impact on their lack of success in close games.
