The Indianapolis Colts shocked the NFL world when they announced they were signing 44-year-old Philip Rivers to their practice squad. The former Colts and Los Angeles Chargers quarterback retired following the 2020 season in which he led the Colts to a playoff berth, where their season ended in the wild card round with a loss to the Buffalo Bills.
And while the entirety of the NFL media world is loving every second of this unlikely story, there is one guy who clearly hates it, and that is Cam Newton.
The former NFL MVP says it's a slap in his face that Rivers got a call before he did.
"It's almost like a slap in my face," Newton said on 4th and 1.
Newton was then asked if all of the media ventures he has perhaps sent a message that he wasn't available, which leads him to scream into the camera.
"Did Philip Rivers send any type of signs that he was available," Newton screeched. "Why are you asking me to do something that everybody else didn't do? I ain't no lab rat."
Newton then asks rhetorically if anyone follows his Snapchat, which features several videos of him working out and staying ready, followed by the former MVP saying he never retired from the NFL.
"I did not [retire], and will not because of an opportunity like this," Newton said. "I don't give a damn if [Rivers] was in their family, he is 44 years old. How are you gonna hold Cam Newton to a standard you're not gonna hold everybody else [to]?"
The last time we saw Cam Newton on a football field, he threw four touchdowns to five interceptions in 2021, including going 5-of-21 with two interceptions vs. The Miami Dolphins. In contrast, the last time we saw Philip Rivers, he was walking off the field after a loss in a playoff game against the Buffalo Bills after throwing for over 4,000 yards and 24 touchdowns.
