Just when we thought we finally had an answer on Joe Mixon's status for the rest of the season, the Houston Texans running back is pushing back against a report that stated he would miss the entire 2025 campaign.
Mixon has been on the non-football injury list since the offseason with a foot issue. The details of that injury remain a mystery, but clearly it has been serious enough to keep Mixon out for the first 12 weeks.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Mixon is not expected to play this season, which falls in line with previous reporting from Aaron Wilson of Click2Houston.com.
"Sources: Texans RB Joe Mixon is not expected to play this season as he deals with a foot injury from the offseason," Rapoport reported on Thursday.
However, Mixon is pushing back against the report via a post on social media that suggests his 2025 fate has not been decided after all.
"Now, I get everyone’s looking for splash news and clickbait," Mixon said in response to Rapoport's post. "But I’m just curious, Ian how do you know more about me than me?"
The official word from the team, and more specifically from Texans general manager Nick Caserio, is Mixon's status remains up in the air.
That came from Caserio on Tuesday.
“It’s not that I’m trying to be evasive, it’s just a very gray situation,” Caserio said on Sports Radio 610. “Joe’s worked at it. There were times where he’s made progress and other times when the progress is kind of stalled. Players in his situation are on the reserve list until they’re not.
"Joe’s doing everything he can," Caserio added. "Obviously we’re getting pretty late in the game here, so I don’t want to establish any sort of expectations. A month ago or whatever it was, I mentioned we’d have a better idea in three or four weeks, or whatever it was. I don’t think we have any more clarity at this point. I think at this point he’s out until he’s not. It’s a very gray, a lot of ambiguity, there’s not a lot of clarity, it’s nobody’s fault, it’s just the reality of the situation.”
Just when we thought we were out on Joe Mixon for 2025, he pulled us back in.
Looks like we'll have to keep the light on for him after all.
