Houston head coach DeMeco Ryans confirmed earlier this week that Stroud would miss Sunday’s game after failing to clear protocol following a concussion suffered in Week 9 against the Denver Broncos. Stroud did not participate in any practices throughout the week and was ruled out on Friday's final injury report.
Texans rule out CJ Stroud for Week 10
Last week, Stroud hit his head on the turf during a scramble against Denver, forcing him out of the game. It was his second career concussion.
The Texans have not announced a timetable for his return, though the earliest opportunity would be Week 11 against the Tennessee Titans if he clears concussion protocol.
Davis Mills, a former starter for Houston, will take over as the Texans try to keep their playoff hopes alive. Mills brings extensive experience, having started 25 career NFL games.
A native of Atlanta, Mills attended Greater Atlanta Christian School in Norcross, Georgia, where he passed for 6,290 yards and 66 touchdowns and was ranked as the nation’s top quarterback recruit in his class.
"[Mills] has started games in his league before, so there's nothing new for him," Ryans said Wednesday. "It is a benefit for him, being able to get the reps throughout practice, get walk-through [reps], getting every single rep that he can get. He's done a good job with that. Today, he did an outstanding job. We were efficient in and out of the huddle, at the line of scrimmage. He did a great job of communicating."
He went on to play college football at Stanford, earning All-Pac-12 honorable mention in 2020. Houston selected Mills in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft
