Why Packers haven't cut kicker Brandon McManus after 5 field goal misses in 6 games image

The Green Bay Packers are sticking by kicker Brandon McManus.

He has already missed five field goals in six games this season (11-for-16).

His 68.8% field-goal percentage is second-worst in the NFL, and the Rams just benched the guy, Joshua Karty, who is worse.

Green Bay got a look at a different kicker for two weeks when McManus had a right quad injury. Lucas Havrisik kicked for the Packers in those weeks.

Heading into Monday Night Football against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 10, though, McManus is still the Packers' kicker.

Why is Brandon McManus still the Packers kicker?

The Packers' coaching staff has expressed that they still believe in McManus.

“He’s getting healthier. He’s had a pretty good week kicking the ball,” special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia told reporters on Friday.

Bisaccia then expanded on that:

“Why not the confidence in Brandon? People miss kicks, people miss tackles, people miss throws, people miss catches, people miss blocks. He missed a kick in the game (against the Carolina Panthers last Sunday, from 43 yards in a three-point loss). He’s kicking off really well. He’s getting healthier and healthier by the day. Had a helluva set yesterday in practice, anticipate him having a really good day tomorrow.”

Kickers' jobs tend to be in jeopardy quickly in the NFL. That could happen for McManus, despite making 21-of-23 field goals last season for Green Bay.

But for now, the Packers will rely on McManus to make his kicks.
