The Detroit Lions pay their guys.
In recent times, that's the trend. When it's time for one of their proven contributors to get a contract extension, the Lions make it happen.
Up next will be Jahmyr Gibbs.
Working against Gibbs is the modern trend of not paying running backs the big bucks.
Working for Gibbs? The fact that he's started his career as well as any RB in the history of the NFL.

There's going to be a decision to be made, but if the Lions' history is any indication, Gibbs will be paid.
"Gibbs is off to a record-breaking start to his young career with 47 total touchdowns, which is tied with Barry Sanders for the most touchdowns by a player in his first three seasons," ESPN's Eric Woodyard wrote on Tuesday. "Detroit has a track record of rewarding its top players, with nearly $1 billion worth of contracts signed to nine players since spring 2024. Gibbs is still on his rookie deal and has a fifth-year option in 2027, but he is eligible for an extension this offseason."

With a few weeks left, Gibbs should break that Sanders record and stand alone atop an impressive NFL record board.
He's a dynamic and powerful runner and receiver of the football, capable of doing just about anything on offense. He's the type of player you build a whole system around.
The salary cap could come for the Lions eventually, but it shouldn't stop them from extending Gibbs. He's too good, too valuable, too special. Detroit's standard move is to keep around its best players. Gibbs certainly qualifies.
