The Detroit Lions pass rush is looking incredibly weak outside of Aidan Hutchinson ahead of training camp, so general manager Brad Holmes should address the issue sooner rather than later.
If Detroit wants to swing big to upgrade the pass-rushing department around Hutchinson, Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox suggests the team trades for disgruntled Cincinnati Bengals edge rusher Trey Hendrickson.
"The Lions released [Za'Darius] Smith this offseason. Bringing him back or acquiring another pass rusher via free agency or trade—Trey Hendrickson looms as a top trade target—would be wise," Knox wrote.
Hendrickson and the Bengals seem destined for a breakup. Though both sides have restarted contract talks, ESPN's Adam Schefter stated on the Pat McAfee Show that they are still far apart on a long-term extension.
"The Bengals and Trey Hendrickson are talking again but they're not any further along," Schefter told Pat McAfee. "I think there's a disagreement over value and there's also a disagreement over the length of the deal. They can't even find common ground on the length of the deal."
The Lions, who have yet to replace Za'Darius Smith after releasing him in March, should aggressively pursue Hendrickson.
The 30-year-old would form the most dominant pass-rushing duo in football with Hutchinson, and he could be the missing piece that elevates Detroit into the favorites to hoist the Lombardi Trophy in San Francisco in February.
Acquiring Hendrickson, who has posted two straight seasons with 17.5 sacks, will cost premium draft capital and a lucrative long-term deal. However, it would be well worth it for Dan Campbell's Super Bowl-hopeful squad.
