Blocked field goals are all the rage during the 2025 NFL season.
We've seen what feels like countless over the first four weeks, and some of them have completely swung games, as was the case in the Chicago Bears-Las Vegas Raiders Week 4 contest on Sunday, for example.
The Detroit Lions have yet to fall victim to this trend, and head coach Dan Campbell doesn't plan on that happening anytime soon.
“We’re not going to let that happen here,” Campbell said of a blocked field goal, per Pride of Detroit's Jeremy Reisman.
“You battle your tail off for three hours, and that one time you didn’t quite take the right step, or your pad level wasn’t good, or you lunged, or you didn’t, or you were too high, and the guy runs through and makes a block, and it’s all for naught,” he added. “And then you go back, and you say, ‘Man, if I just would’ve been lower. If I would’ve locked in on that play. If I really would’ve treated it like, man, everybody’s watching and we’re going to lose this game if I don’t block this guy.’ If you really treated that way, then it wouldn’t happen.”
Over the first four weeks, there have been a combined total of 12 blocked field goals and extra points. There really isn't an exact rhyme or reason why this is happening, but it has created some wild outcomes throughout the NFL.
While we appreciate Campbell's dedication to not falling victim to a blocked field goal, this feels like it might be a jinx moment. Hopefully that is not the case.
While the Lions haven't had any field goals blocked this season, kicker Jake Bates has missed a pair, although one of them was from a whopping 67 yards out.
