The Denver Broncos announced plans Tuesday to make historic Burnham Yard the future home of a privately funded, retractable-roof stadium. The team promises to transform the former railyard into a year-round destination for sports and entertainment while unlocking a wave of mixed-use development in west Denver.
The proposed stadium will be built by the Walton-Penner Ownership Group and aims to triple the number of major events currently hosted at Empower Field, creating new opportunities for Denver to attract the Super Bowl, NCAA Final Four, and high-profile concerts. “Today is a remarkable win-win-win for Denver,” Mayor Mike Johnston said. “The Broncos are staying in Denver, we will finally open up Burnham Yard for development, and we get to reimagine the Mile High Stadium site as a thriving community in West Denver.”
"It's our goal to have world-class facilities for this team and for our fans, obviously, with the rich tradition and history at Mile High, and find something that the fans would love as a site that had proximity to that and Denver," Owner & CEO Greg Penner said. "We couldn't be more excited about Burnham Yard as the preferred site to build a new stadium and an incredible year-round destination."
Burnham Yard is a 58-acre site in the La Alma/Lincoln Park and Baker neighborhoods. It was operated for more than 150 years as a railyard and abandoned in 2016. The Broncos’ multi-billion-dollar stadium project will include environmental cleanup, affordable housing, parks, public spaces, and amenities developed in partnership with local communities, aiming to weave the team’s new home into the city’s historic fabric.
The city’s lease for Empower Field ends in 2030, after which the stadium property and its parking lots will revert to city ownership for redevelopment alongside residents, businesses, and cultural organizations. Denver officials and Historic Denver signaled support for integrating Burnham Yard’s remaining historic structures into the new stadium, blending the site’s legacy with a state-of-the-art sports facility built for the future.
