The Denver Broncos moved on from 35 players earlier this week in an effort to get down to the league-mandated number of 53 players on the roster. One of the team's toughest cuts, though not unexpected, was that of cornerback Damarri Mathis.

The Broncos took Mathis in the fourth round of the 2022 draft, and he had an up-and-down tenure with the team. That tenure came to an end on Tuesday when the Broncos waived him. One day later, he had a new team. Mathis was claimed on waivers by the Carolina Panthers, where he will get a chance to work under Ejiro Evero again.

Evero, now the defensive coordinator in Carolina, held that same position in Denver in 2022, Mathis' rookie season. That was a strong season for him and he just never seemed to transition well to the defense that Vance Joseph runs.

The Panthers are a team that could use a jolt on defense. The team has former first-round pick Jaycee at one of the cornerback positions and Mathis should get a chance to earn some reps at the other one.

In addition to Mathis, former Broncos running back Audric Estime found a new team when he signed with the Eagles' practice squad, wide receiver Courtney Jackson landed on the practice squad in Seattle and undrafted offensive tackle Xavier Truss was claimed by the New Orleans Saints
