The date was November 10, 2024. The scene was Arrowhead Stadium. The Denver Broncos looked like a team ready to overtake the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West division.
The Broncos needed a late-game drive from Bo Nix in order to set up a game-winning field goal. Nix, then a rookie, took his team down the field like a long-term veteran, setting up that kick. But then disaster struck, and Wil Lutz had his kick blocked to the disgust of Broncos Country.
On Sunday, we saw a near carbon copy of that game in many aspects.
This time, the game was tied, and this time, the venue was Empower Field. But the Broncos needed Nix to take his team down the field and set up a field goal to win it.
After forcing a three-and-out from Kansas City, the Broncos got the ball back with just under three minutes to play. Nix converted a 3rd-and-15 with a 20-yard completion to Courtland Sutton before hitting Troy Franklin with this 32-yard pass, which ended up being one of the biggest plays of the game.

That set up Lutz to get redemption, and wouldn't you know it, the kick was from 35 yards out. If that sounds familiar, it should because that kick that was blocked at Arrowhead Stadium last year was also a 35-yard kick. This time, the result was different. Lutz put it right down the center of the uprights to give the Broncos a 22-19 win that might be the team's biggest since winning Super Bowl 50.
The Broncos now improve to 9-2 on the season and drop the Chiefs to 5-5 in the process, making it extremely difficult at this point for the Chiefs to win a tenth straight division title. Instead, the Broncos are now in the driver's seat to reclaim that crown.
