After signing a three-year, $35 million contract with the Denver Broncos this offseason, linebacker Dre Greenlaw has yet to make his team debut after suffering a torn quad in the offseason.
He was placed on injured reserve in September, but the veteran is getting closer to a return.
Senior NFL insider Adam Schefter announced that the Broncos designated Greenlaw for return from IR on Wednesday.
What to know about first-year Broncos LB Dre Greenlaw
Greenlaw, 28, emerged as one of the league's best linebackers after being drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2019 NFL Draft. While being paired with All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner to begin his career, the two emerged as a top linebacker combination in the league from 2019 to 2023.
Greenlaw tallied 455 total tackles, 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and three interceptions in the six years he was in San Francisco, but a consistent pattern of injuries forced the 49ers to move on from him in free agency.
This was when the Broncos decided to pick up the veteran. Soon after signing with Denver, Greenlaw suffered a torn quad during the offseason. This injury has kept him from playing in the Broncos' first six games of the season.
If everything goes well leading up to Denver's Week 7 matchup against the New York Giants, he could be activated to the team and make his season debut as the Broncos go for a fourth straight win.
The plan for the Broncos is to pair Greenlaw with fellow linebacker Alex Singleton at the middle of the defense.
