NFL insider offers 'name to watch' for Cowboys' defensive coordinator vacancy image

In what has become a yearly occurrence, the Dallas Cowboys are in the market for a new defensive coordinator.

According to several reports, the Cowboys have fired Matt Eberflus after just one season and will now look for their fourth defensive coordinator in four years.

On that front, The Athletic's Dianna Russini says Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores is a "name to watch" as a replacement.

"One name to watch for the Cowboys’ new vacancy? Brian Flores," Russini reported.

There are multiple problems with the idea the Cowboys might hire Flores, who is set to have his contract expire in Minnesota.

For starters, Flores will garner interest as a head-coach candidate and could land a job, which is just one reason why he might not be available.

Another reason is the Vikings are likely very interested in keeping him around, and we would guess Flores is interested in staying in Minnesota if he can't get a head coaching job elsewhere.

Dallas would likely have to throw a ton of money at Flores and we know that's not something Jerry Jones is keen on doing, especially when he'll still be paying Eberflus.

Even if Jones does want to pony up the dough, the Vikings will probably match it. Even coming close could be enough to entice Flores to stay over going to Dallas.

If they can pry Flores away, there will be a stability concern, as Flores could very well leave for a head-coach gig after one season. That would leave the Cowboys back in a familiar boat in 2027.

As much as we'd love to see Flores in Dallas, there are just too many roadblocks for that to happen.
