The Dallas Cowboys' secondary has been a strength for several years, and there's no reason that should end in 2025.

From Trevon Diggs to DaRon Bland to Donovan Wilson, the Cowboys are stacked with ballhawks on the back end of their defense. But as the cornerback group has grown deeper, the safeties are a bit behind on the depth chart.

Wilson and Malik Hooker would be the starters if the season began today, and Dallas has noteworthy backups in Markquese Bell and Juanyeh Thomas. However, one NFL writer believes Dallas could still make a splash on the trade market.

On Monday, Anthony Palacios of Last Word on Sports named New Orleans Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu, a three-time Pro Bowler and 2022 Super Bowl champion, as a potential trade target for the Cowboys.

"The Cowboys’ re-signing Markquese Bell early this offseason could be a sign that this could be Donovan Wilson’s last year with the team," Palacios wrote.

"Malik Hooker is safe for now, but they have yet to upgrade their secondary unit other than drafting Shavon Revel Jr. and Kaiir Elam for the cornerback department. Since they traded for George Pickens for their offense, they should upgrade the defense to possibly replicate the same success and take advantage of a competitive NFC East race."

Mathieu, 33, had three interceptions, seven passes defended, and 62 total tackles a season ago. Most importantly, he was able to play all 17 games, showing that he's still got some mileage left in the tank after 12 NFL seasons.

There hasn't been much smoke behind the Saints trading Mathieu, but they could come to their senses any day and realize that they're on track to be one of the NFL's worst teams this year, meaning a fire sale would be smart business.

It's hard to say how likely that scenario is, but the Cowboys could certainly get involved for Mathieu if it unfolds.
