Cowboys' Micah Parsons $161 million contract extension becomes Jerry Jones' next item image

The NFL Draft is over, and Jerry Jones has one job left this offseason.

It's time to sign Micah Parsons to a record-setting contract extension, with NFL.com columnist Judy Battista putting that as a priority on the Dallas to-do list for the rest of the offseason.

Yes, Parsons will be pricy.

Spotrac projects his market value as a four-year deal worth $145 million. But he's almost certainly going to cost more than that

The current record for a non-QB is Myles Garrett's four-year, $160 million deal with the Browns.

Given Parsons' age and talent, it's a sure thing that the Cowboys make him the new record holder. Whether they keep it simple at $161 million or blow the number out of the water remains to be seen.

Parsons is a superstar, having recorded at least 12 sacks in each of his first four seasons out of Penn State.

Jones is generally good about paying his homegrown stars, as he's done with both Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb.

The negotiations took an odd turn earlier in the offseason when Jones said he doesn't even know the name of Parsons' agent.

But that likely won't stop a deal from getting done. If Parsons wants to be in Dallas, he'll get a supersized nine-figure contract to do so.

The Cowboys need to make sure it happens. The future fortunes of their franchise's defense rest on Parsons' strong shoulders.
