Is Shedeur Sanders starting this week? What Dillon Gabriel injury news means for Browns rookie QB in Week 12 image

Shedeur Sanders entered training camp No. 4 on the Cleveland Browns' quarterback depth chart, but many figured it was only a matter of time before he saw some action in his rookie season.

That moment arrived in Week 11, when Sanders replaced an injured Dillon Gabriel against the Baltimore Ravens

The moment wasn't all that Sanders expected. The fifth-round pick entered with a lead and left the field with a loss, having completed only 4-of-16 passes for 47 yards and a pair of turnovers. With Gabriel concussed, however, could Sanders have a chance at redemption in Week 12?

Here's what you need to know about Sanders' status for Sunday's game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Is Shedeur Sanders starting this week?

The Browns announced Wednesday that Sanders will start against the Raiders.

Gabriel did not practice Wednesday and remains in the concussion protocol, leaving Sanders and Bailey Zappe as Cleveland's two healthy quarterbacks.

Sanders struggled mightily in his first taste of NFL action against the Ravens, but he should be in a better position for success in his first start. The rookie is spending the week getting first-team reps, and the Raiders' defense will be on short rest after an abysmal performance against the Dallas Cowboys.

The matchup could also be a revenge tour for Sanders, as the Raiders were considered a potential landing spot for him before he slid down the draft in April. That said, every team passed on Sanders multiple times, so he might not need an additional chip on his shoulder as he suits up in Las Vegas.

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said after Week 11 that Gabriel remains Cleveland's starter when healthy, but Sanders is set to get a chance to show what he can do in Week 12 with his fellow rookie still in concussion protocol.

With Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett both traded after starting training camp as half of a four-way battle for the starting job, Bailey Zappe is the Browns' emergency No. 3 quarterback and is set to be active as Sanders' backup against the Raiders.

Dillon Gabriel injury update

Gabriel did not practice on Wednesday and remains in concussion protocol after suffering the injury against the Ravens on Sunday.

The NFL's concussion protocol mandates that players participate in two practices symptom-free before returning to game action. While Gabriel still had time to do just that even after sitting out on Wednesday, the Browns clearly believed he did not have a chance to clear protocol before Sunday's game.
