The Cleveland Browns are struggling to find a head coach, and an NFL insider may have revealed why.
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Browns' coaching search process is very different from those around the league. Cleveland requires candidates to take a personality test, write an essay, and perform other tasks that give the franchise data on each coaching option.
Pelissero adds that the Browns have been using this process for many years.
"This is not new. The Browns have done this for a long time. As one high-powered coaching agent said to me, 'The Browns are the Browns. Their process is different than everyone else’s, and we’ll see where it leads them this time,'" Pelissero said on The Rich Eisen Show.
This unique and, some would say, over-the-top coaching process from the Browns may be the reason why the Browns are struggling to find a head coach.
It could also be the reason why Mike McDaniel and Jesse Minter backed out of Cleveland's head coaching search and opted to take jobs elsewhere.
McDaniel took the Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator gig, though he is still interviewing for the Buffalo Bills head coaching job. Minter was named the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens on Wednesday. Both had interviews scheduled with the Browns.
Cleveland still has a long way to go in its coaching search, as the Browns haven't even satisfied the Rooney Rule yet and have held second interviews with just a few candidates.
There is still a lot of work left to be done, and with high-level candidates like McDaniel, Minter, and others showing little interest in the job, it may be time for Cleveland to switch up their interview process.
