The Cleveland Browns are spiraling, and fast.

Despite a decent showing yesterday in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the Browns ultimately fell to the New York Jets, 27-20, thanks to poor special teams play and some boneheaded penalties in the final minutes of the game.

Maligned rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel had a middling performance, completing 53.1% of his passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns, but the cries for Shedeur Sanders to make his first NFL start are growing louder.

Kevin Stefanski addresses the Browns quarterback situation

At his Monday press conference following the loss to the Jets, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski was asked when Sanders could get an opportunity to start.

"I don't think it's fair to speculate," Stefanski told the press.

"We're committed to getting better as an offense. Dillon [Gabriel] has certainly committed to improving every which way he can, and all the while, all of our players, young players are developing and working so hard behind the scenes to make sure that they're getting better on a daily basis."

Stefanski essentially provided a non-answer, as he continues to stick with Gabriel as his quarterback.

With a tilt against the division rival Baltimore Ravens on deck, one more ugly outing from the former Oregon Duck at quarterback could be the final nail in the coffin and open the door for the insertion of Sanders under center.

The Browns' season is all but lost at this point, and they have nothing to lose by seeing what their other rookie quarterback has in the tank before they inevitably pick a new one in the 2026 NFL Draft.
