ESPN Insider Tony Grossi shocked the Browns fanbase by naming Packers coach Matt LaFleur as a "75% favorite" for the Cleveland head coaching job if he leaves Green Bay. While the search for Kevin Stefanski’s replacement intensifies, Grossi also pointed to Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator, Grant Udinski, as the 50% leader among currently available candidates.
LaFleur is viewed as the premier candidate because of his proven ability to stabilize and elevate a franchise. Grossi notes that the Browns are looking for a "high-level, established winner" who can maximize the roster immediately.
Why would he leave a stable situation in Green Bay? Grossi explains that "the smoke is real" regarding internal friction or a desire for a fresh start after being with the team since 2019. A disappointing Wild Card playoffs exit doesn't help either.
ESPN's Adam Schefter also reported on LaFleur's status, "The way, I would interpret it right now is, it's up in the air."
He suggests that Browns owner Jimmy Haslam's history of being aggressive to close deals, and a ready to win defense could present a "unique challenge" that could lure LaFleur away if he feels his time in Green Bay is over.
Grossi emphasizes that if LaFleur gives the signal he’s open to a move, the job is essentially his, "If he wants it, he's the guy".
