Browns insider reveals what new play caller Tommy Rees brings to the offense image

The Cleveland Browns made a drastic change to their offense, with head coach Kevin Stefanski giving up playcalling duties to offensive coordinator Tommy Rees.

It's the second time in two years Stefanski has given up the responsibility.

It's fair to wonder what will be different under Rees, after all, it's not like the Browns are changing up their scheme, just whose relaying the plays to the quarterback in the huddle.

Cabot: Rees brings new approach to Notre Dame

In an appearance on 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland, Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot revealed what she thinks will be different under Rees, the new playcaller.

"I'm not gonna say it was a ceremonial change but I do think they had to do something, and they're not even 100% sure it's gonna work at all. He's never called plays before in the NFL," said Cabot to Ken Carman and Anthony Lima.

"He's fresh out of the college ranks, and you're dealing with two really young quarterbacks and to a certain extent Bailey Zappe is a pretty young quarterback. So, Tommy is fresh out of the college ranks, called plays at Alabama in 2023, understands the college quarterback mindset, he was one himself...I also think he'll probably run the ball a little bit more maybe stick with it at times when Kevin would go away from it."

It seems the Browns will feature a heavier emphasis on the run game than they have in weeks past, leaning on rookie running back Quinshon Judkins when they take on the New York Jets this weekend.

Cleveland will be facing a Jets team that just shipped out two of their best defensive players at the trade deadline in Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams, so on the surface, it should be a nice first game for Rees to settle into.
