Rumors are swirling about the Browns and Kevin Stefanski parting ways. Would replacing him with current defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz be the best move?

Despite being a two-time NFL Coach of the Year winner, it appears that Stefanski's time in Cleveland has run its course. Seven wins over the past two seasons, and a 31st ranked offense will lead to that type of speculation.

The next question becomes - who should take over from Stefanski as the team's next head coach? What about internal candidate, DC Jim Schwartz?

This would be Schwartz' second swing as a NFL head coach. As Detroit Lions sideline boss from 2009-2013, Schwartz compiled a record of 29-52. That included one playoff berth in 2011, where the Lions lost to the New Orleans Saints in a wild card game.

The 2023 AP Assistant Coach of the Year winner isn't afraid of taking on a challenge. He took over the Lions job after the franchise's 0-16 campaign in 2008. Schwartz would find himself in a similar 'build from the ground up' mode in Cleveland.

A logical argument to promote Schwartz is that it keeps the Browns' impressive defense intact. Under his tutelage Myles Garrett is set to win a second Defensive Player of the Year award, while linebacker Carson Schwesinger is expected to secure Rookie DPOY honors.

Schwartz is a straight shooter, and would spread the same player accountability and discipline from his defense to the entire squad. His relentless nature was displayed this week to the media when he commented on the poor record this year with, "they don't pay us for the good times."

Elevating Schwartz would need to come with a fresh offensive philosophy. Stefanski's system is stale. Who would be his new creative offensive coordinator?

One final consideration - would Schwartz even want the Browns head coaching gig if it came with the same front office collaboration/meddling that Stefanski had to deal with?
