When the team is down and all hope looks lost, there's not many quarterbacks you'd want ahead of Caleb Williams.
This season has been fueled by improbable comebacks and the young quarterback's spontaneous style. But Williams had the highlight of his career on Sunday vs. The Rams.
On 4th and 4 with less than a minute to play in the game, Williams was immediately pressured and fell at least 10, almost 20 yards behind the pocket. On his heels with nothing to lose, Williams chucked up a prayer in the corner of the end zone to Cole Kmet.
For a moment all of Soldier Field was quiet, until Kmet corralled the ball and unleashed an uproar across the Windy City.
The incredible stat behind Williams' game-tying throw
The pass will officially go down in the record books as a 14-yard touchdown from Williams to Kmet. But Next Gen Stats was quick to follow up on the play, pointing out that it traveled 51.2 yards through the air.
Caleb Williams' 14-yard game-tying touchdown pass to Cole Kmet traveled 51.2 yards in the air, the longest completed pass by air distance in the red zone in the NGS era (since 2016).

It's the longest completed pass by air distance in the red zone since 2016. It's not surprising considering a team would have to start a play inside of the 20-yard line and the quarterback would have to run 30 yards backwards during the play.

Simply put, the play is illogical and unlikely. Williams had no choice but to backpedal and at that point almost everyone counted the play dead. But the Chicago gunslinger had different ideas.
It's now back-to-back weeks that Williams has made an improbable throw in the clutch. Regardless of the Bears' playoff fate, their young quarterback has cemented belief in what he can do when it matters most.
