When the Chicago Bears hired Ben Johnson as head coach, there was a ton of excitement from the Bears fans about the future because of his offensive expertise with the Detroit Lions. Quarterback Caleb Williams struggled at times during his rookie season.
During the first two games of the regular season, the Bears have scored touchdowns on opening drives. After that Williams has been shaky when plays are not on script. Chicago lost to Detroit 52-21 on Sunday afternoon, and the Bears dropped to 0-2 on the season. Are there questions about Williams and Johnson as a head coach-quarterback duo moving forward?
Colin Cowherd Questions the Relationship Between Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams
Colin Cowherd was on the Herd w/Colin Cowherd on Monday talking about the Bears rocky start. He has major questions about the relationship between the head coach and the quarterback. Cowherd said,
"The further this QB gets away from the play script, the worse he is. He's like a studio musician having to go live or a stand up comedian who's totally reliant on joke writers."
During the first two games of the 2025 NFL season, Williams has completed 61.5% of his passes for 417 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. His completion percentage has not been good through the first two weeks. Williams wants to play hero ball on every down while Johnson wants a quarterback who is in rhythm on every play.
If Chicago finishes with another 5-12 record this season, many will wonder if Williams will be the long-term answer at quarterback for this franchise. If he is not going to be the answer for the Bears in the long-term, is there a chance that Chicago looks for a quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft? There is a lot of time left in the 2025 regular season for things to change.
The Bears will next play against the Dallas Cowboys. Dallas has one of the worst defenses in the NFL. If Williams can't complete close to 68% of his passes and throw for over 300 yards and three touchdowns for Chicago against Dallas, then the Bears may not have their long-term answer. It will only grow more frustration for Johnson and Bears fans will claim that general manager Ryan Poles drafted the wrong quarterback.
