Bears coach Ben Johnson sends clear message on team's newest trade arrival image

The Chicago Bears made a modest move at this week's trade deadline, shipping out a 2026 sixth-rounder to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for defensive end Joe Tryon-Shoyinka and a seventh-round draft selection.

After being rocked by an onslaught of injuries in recent weeks, Chicago is clearly looking to bolster its defense. In Week 8, rookie Bears defensive lineman incurred a season-ending ACL tear, while fourth-year defensive end Dominique Robinson hurt his ankle. Robinson, at least, could return at some point — he's considered week-to-week as of this writing.

In the Bears' sloppy 47-42 Week 9 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals last Sunday, defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo ruptured his Achilles tendon.

Tryon-Shoyinka arrives just in time

With a scant three defensive ends available prior to the trade deadline, Poles zeroed in on Tryon-Shoyinka. Now, first-year Chicago head coach Ben Johnson has weighed in on general Ryan Poles' newest acquisition, per Phil Thompson of The Chicago Tribune

“Real athletic,” Johnson said regarding the newest Bear. “Someone that we really liked coming out (of the University of Washington) as well. But I think he can help us. Unfortunately, we lost Dayo so he will step in and get going.”

Chicago's churn defensively has frustrated Johnson.

“It’s one of those deals where it feels like we take some strides at particular positions, then we take some steps back. It’s wild,” Johnson said. “I felt like we had a solution there with Shemar at defensive end a couple weeks ago. Then we lost him. Then we finally get [Austin] Booker back and we lose Dayo. So it’s a little bit of give and take.”

Tryon-Shoyinka will make his Chicago debut on Sunday, in a home matchup against the reeling New York Giants (2-7).
