Throughout Caleb Williams' rookie season with the Chicago Bears, he was sacked a total of 68 times, the third most ever in NFL history.
Only the Houston Texans' David Carr (76 times in 2002) and the Philadelphia Eagles' Randall Cunningham (72 times in 1986) had been brought down behind the line of scrimmage more.
In 2025, though, it's a whole new game for Williams, the former No. 1 overall pick has only been sacked seven times in four games, and he credits the big men up front for the change.
Caleb Williams attributes fewer sacks to his improved offensive line
In his press conference this week, ahead of the Bears' game against the Washington Commanders and fellow 2024 draft classmate Jayden Daniels, he was asked about the changes on offense that have led to him staying off the ground.
"It starts with those guys up front. Those guys up front have been awesome since I've been here this year. So, I think being able to get in rhythm with those guys, not having many guys down in a sense, being able to get multiple reps," Williams said.
"I think I've said it multiple times from last year to now, it's being able to figure out where their weaknesses are, because every player has some weaknesses or anything like that."
Chicago was able to reshuffle most of the interior of their offensive line this past offseason, acquiring Joe Thuney and Jonah Jackson from the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams, respectively.
They also signed former Atlanta Falcons center Drew Dalman to anchor the middle of that offensive line.
The sweeping changes across the Bears' offensive line and coaching staff have done wonders for Chicago thus far this season, and they hope to continue that coming out of the bye when they face the Commanders.
