Carolina Panthers wake up to good news in NFC South standings image

Carolina Panthers, welcome to first place.

On Friday morning, that's where the Panthers sit, alone atop the NFC South standings thanks to a shocking result Thursday between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons.

The Bucs and Panthers entered Thursday night tied at 7-6. And then Tampa Bay took a 28-14 lead into the fourth quarter against Atlanta.

But then the Falcons went touchdown (failed two-point conversion), touchdown and field goal to win, 29-28.

The Bucs fell to 7-7.

And there the Panthers are, alone in first place.

There's still work to be done, of course. For Carolina to leave Week 15 as the division leader, it'll need to beat the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

Then there's the matter of two games against the Bucs in three weeks, both in Week 16 and Week 18. Those could decide everything anyway.

In Week 17, Carolina plays the Seahawks, while the Bucs play the Dolphins.

Nothing is a given, but there really wasn't a whole lot of expectation that the Panthers would be anywhere near first place this late in the season.

Just the fact that they've got a chance at the postseason is hugely encouraging.

They'll have to give the Saints their proper respect, though. It was just last Sunday that Tyler Shough and New Orleans stunned Tampa Bay to send them spiraling out toward this current spot in the standings.

If the Panthers can avoid an upset, they'll start next week as division leaders, too.
