James Cook would be one of the best running backs in the NFL no matter what jersey number he was wearing.

But it's safe to say everything he does looks a little bit cooler rocking a single-digit jersey number for the Buffalo Bills.

Cook broke into the NFL wearing No. 28 as the No. 63 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

But when the NFL allowed single-digit numbers to skill position players, Cook switched to 4.

There's a familial reason, and it sure does look sharp.

Why does James Cook wear jersey number 4?

James Cook wears the No. 4 for a couple of reasons.

He wore it at the University of Georgia.

It also is a family tradition.

The older brother of Dalvin and James, Deandre Burnett, wore that number as a young football player.

Dalvin wore it next. James followed suit.

This is how James explained it when he changed to 4:

"Mentally, I'm better in that number. Overall, I think it's a better thing for my family and for everybody around here," James Cook said in 2023. "[You're] going to see a version that you've never seen before. You're going to see something special."

He has certainly been special since taking on 4.
