Jordan Poyer is one of the best defensive players of this recent era of Buffalo Bills winning football.
But right now, Poyer isn't on the field.
That's not because he's somewhere else. Poyer is under contract with the Bills after a season away with the Miami Dolphins.
But right now, Buffalo is opting to do other things with its safeties.
Before this season, Poyer had spent seven years with the Buffalo Bills, from 2017 through 2023.

In that time, he suited up for 107 games, all starts.
Poyer recorded 22 interceptions with the Bills, at least two in every season except 2023.
He also made 682 tackles, including 35 for loss. He had 11 sacks, eight forced fumbles, six recovered fumbles and 48 passes defensed.
In 2024, he departed for the Dolphins, and he played in 16 games and had 98 tackles.
Poyer re-signed with the Bills in late August.
“This is where my heart is,” Poyer told reporters after his signing. “It’s where home is, where I essentially grew up in this game. On and off the field. My daughter’s grown up in this town, this city. And I feel like this is a way for me to give back to the community, to this team. I feel like I can still give back to the game in many ways, whether that be on the field or off the field.”

Where is Jordan Poyer?
Right now, Jordan Poyer is a member of the Bills' practice squad.
They could choose to promote him to the active roster for game day, but so far, they haven't done so through three weeks.
It's not clear whether Poyer still needs to get up to speed after signing late in the offseason, or if he was more of a veteran presence signing without a lot of expectation of playing time.
The fact that Poyer made 98 tackles last season makes it seem like he could still contribute.
Right now, the Bills have Taylor Rapp and Cole Bishop starting at safety, with Damar Hamlin as the main backup.
Poyer is 34 years old and on the downslope of his career, but he'll likely see snaps with Buffalo before this season ends, just not yet.
