Have Bills found ideal James Cook backup? Why Ray Davis deserves shot in 2026 image

The Buffalo Bills ended their 2025 regular season in style and sent Highmark Stadium off in a good mood with a 35-8 win over the New York Jets.

With a host of starters rested, it was a chance for backups and others down on the depth chart for valuable snaps, and one player who got a chance was running back Ray Davis.

And he didn't waste it.

Davis rushed for 151 yards on 21 carries, along with having 23 yards and a touchdown from two receptions, as he outrushed the Jets all by himself.

But what allowed the second-year back to obliterate New York like that?

“Just trusting in myself and believing in the scheme,” Davis said. “Going out there and just taking in the opportunity that I was given. I just wanted to show everybody I am who I am, and I deserve to be in the league, and I have all the confidence in myself to go out there and play ball.”

Davis deserves 2026 shot

When you have James Cook as your starter, it is hard to take carries off him to give to others, but looking at Davis' stats from 2025, there is clearly room to get him the football more.

Seven times Davis didn't have a single rush attempt, six times under five rush attempts, and just four times over nine attempts.

Surely, he warrants more touches, and if the coaching staff was on the fence about it, Week 18's performance should have gotten them off that fence.

Yes, taking carries away from Cook isn't ideal, but Davis proved one thing against the Jets.

He deserves more carries.
