The Buffalo Bills were thrown quite the curveball this week after claiming veteran cornerback Darius Slay off waivers.
After the Bills' successful claim following Slay being cut by the Pittsburgh Steelers, he informed the team that he is not reporting and is instead considering retirement, which was especially bad because the Bills cut one of their backup cornerbacks, Ja'Marcus Ingram, to make room for Slay and he has since been claimed off waivers by the Houston Texans.
Slay signed with the Steelers in the offseason after being cut by the Philadelphia Eagles, but he showed clear decline all season long and was a healthy scratch in Week 14 before Pittsburgh cut him loose.
Slay's decision not to report to Buffalo might not be simply because he doesn't have a desire to play anymore. Instead, it might have to do with the specific landing spot.
Slay was a guest on the "Speakeasy" podcast and revealed he didn't feel like packing up and moving at this stage in his life and career.
“I don’t feel like packing up and moving again. I’m 13 years in, I done did it. They would have caught me at like 28, 29? I might have been like ‘OK,’" Slay admitted. "So, it wasn’t a bad fit, it just caught me at a bad time.”
Slay also said he wasn't fond of the cold weather in Buffalo.
However, Slay did sound like he's open to joining two teams, the Eagles and Detroit Lions.
“I don’t know how (NFL) works and I don’t know how I’ll feel in a couple days. But there would be some spots I would love to attend," Slay stated. "Won a championship in Philly. Detroit drafted me.”
Of course, Slay was drafted by the Lions in the second round of the 2013 NFL draft and spent his first seven seasons in the NFL there while also appearing in three Pro Bowls.
He landed with the Eagles in a trade in 2020 and went on to make three more Pro Bowls while also winning a Super Bowl ring.
The problem for Slay joining either one of those teams is the fact that the Bills still own his rights if he comes back.
So, Buffalo would have to cut him, and then he'd be subject to waivers once again, although there would be a good chance he'll pass through this time with teams knowing he only has a few places he'd like to go.
Regardless of what happens next, Slay's comment is going to make him a villain in Buffalo for years to come.
