Bills make decision on cutting Michael Badgley; what does it mean for Matt Prater kicking? image

The Buffalo Bills have moved on from Michael Badgley.

The team officially announced about 2 p.m. ET on Monday that the kicker has been released from their practice squad.

Badgley was the kicker for the Bills in Weeks 16 and 17.

He was 2-for-3 on extra points in Week 16 and made a 41-yard field goal. In Week 17, his only kick attempt was a blocked extra point, and the Bills chose to go for 2 and the win on their second TD rather than have Badgley kick to tie the game.

Badgley was filling in for Matt Prater, who has been filling in all season for the injured Tyler Bass.

It's not clear if the Badgley release means Prater is good to go for Week 18, or if the Bills want to try out a different kicker for the regular season finale against the Jets.

In the NFL, Tuesday is normally workout day. If the Bills bring in kickers for a workout on Tuesday, that suggests Prater isn't fully healed up yet. If they don't work out any new kickers, Prater would seemingly be good to come back from his two-game absence.

Even if Prater is still hurting, it makes sense for the Bills to see what else is out there. They have legitimate aspirations of making it out of the wide-open AFC and getting to the Super Bowl. They will have a few key kicks in the postseason. If they can't trust their kicker, that's a nightmare scenario.

Available free agent kickers include Younghoe Koo and Cade York.

The Bills will tip their hand with what they do in the next 24-48 hours, but Badgley is gone.
