The Buffalo Bills have added several players to their defensive line this offseason. They signed star edge rusher Joey Bosa, as well as defensive linemen Larry Ogunjobi and Michael Hoecht. On top of that, Buffalo drafted three defensive linemen. However, Ogunjobi and Hoecht will be suspended for the first six games of the season due to PED usage. On top of that, the Bills would be making a big bet on rookies playing big roles right away.
Gilberto Manzano of Sports Illustrated says the Bills should bring in one more veteran and sign former Second-Team All-Pro Za'Darius Smith.
"Smith’s best days are behind him, but he proved last season with the Detroit Lions that he’s still capable of being a reliable rotational player for a Super Bowl contender," Manzano writes. "The Bills have already added Joey Bosa, but he has struggled to stay healthy in recent seasons and recently injured his calf. Even if Bosa stays healthy when the season arrives, Buffalo still needs depth behind No. 1 edge rusher Gregory Rousseau. Smith, who’s entering his age-33 season, has 69 career sacks in 10 NFL seasons."
Smith has proven he can still get to the quarterback. He had nine sacks while with the Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions, and he would actually be a better player to start opposite Greg Rousseau rather than Joey Bosa, who should be kept on a pitch count to raise the likelihood of him staying healthy.
