The Atlanta Falcons came into the season with serious hype. For the first time in a while, this year doesn’t feel like a rebuilding season. Heading into the game against the Buccaneers, all eyes were on Younghoe Koo after a disappointing performance last year. Coming into 2025, Koo didn’t have a guaranteed job, but he made it clear he wanted to return to form.

“I'm ready to get back to what I know I'm capable of: being the best in the league," Koo said. "I know I can do that, just going back to the process of what I do, and yeah, I'll get back to that for sure."

If the Falcons want to be successful this season, they need Koo to return to his old self. When he’s on, he can easily contribute more than two field goals per game.

“Much has been made of Michael Penix Jr. and the revamped Falcons defense, but Atlanta finished 31st in field goal percentage in 2024. A healthy, confident Younghoe Koo can make a significant difference in the 2025 campaign,” SI’s Joshua Petry wrote.

However, on Sunday, with the game on the line, Koo missed a kick wide right. Starting quarterback Michael Penix Jr. had a message for him after the miss.

“I told him, 'Just keep being you. Don't let this define you,” Penix said.

After a down year in 2024, some are already calling for Koo’s job. One of them is Mike Conti of Sports Radio 92.9 The Game.

“If I’m the Falcons, I’m giving Matt Coghlin a call. 32-35 on FGs in the USFL last two seasons, with a long of 57. 26-27 inside of 50 yards. Never missed a PAT in five years at Michigan State,” Conti posted.

The Falcons do have Lenny Krieg on the practice squad, but he didn’t win the job out of training camp. Coghlin has an impressive track record at Michigan State, and perhaps a fresh face is needed at the kicking position. While it’s only Week 1, Koo’s time in Atlanta could be nearing its end.
