The Atlanta Falcons might be without quarterback Michael Penix Jr. For a long time.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Penix Jr. Has suffered a possible season-ending knee injury. The young signal-caller will seek a second opinion, but Schefter adds that things aren't looking good for him.
"ESPN sources: Falcons QB Michael Penix suffered a potentially season-ending knee injury during Sunday’s loss to the Panthers. Penix will be seeking a second opinion, but it is not encouraging," Schefter reported.
Schefter's report did not provide specifics about what exactly Penix Jr. Is dealing with, but clearly, it's significant enough to keep him out for the long haul.
With Penix Jr. Sidelined, the Falcons will turn to quarterback Kirk Cousins, who will now guide a 3-7 Atlanta team whose playoff hopes are on life support, and that's putting it nicely.
Penix took over the starting job in Atlanta from Cousins last season and showed promise. However, his second season in the NFL was shaky.
Penix completed 60.1% of his passes for 1,982 yards and nine touchdowns to three picks. He was about as inconsistent as you can get.
Some blame that on Penix just not being good, while others believe coaching is a clear problem that is holding the Washington product back.
Whatever the case may be, it looks like Penix won't have a chance to rebound until 2026.
