Executive predicts Kirk Cousins gets Falcons career lifeline in 2026 image

The Atlanta Falcons haven't had much luck in replacing Matt Ryan.

They thought they had done it with Kirk Cousins, only to draft Michael Penix Jr.

Now that Penix Jr. Is injured and expected to miss at least the early portion of 2026 due to an ACL injury, it puts the Falcons in an interesting spot, quarterback-wise.

They have Cousins still on the roster. A dependable starting-caliber quarterback to fill in until Penix Jr. Gets back.

But fans might not want to see that movie again, and also, Cousins might want out as well.

But for an NFC executive, who spoke with ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Kevin Stefanski might roll with Cousins to begin 2026.

"[The Falcons] bet on Michael Penix not getting hurt, and he got hurt," said an NFC executive. "Penix had the ACL in his left knee repaired in November, his fifth major surgery dating back to college.

"They are going to need somebody early in the season due to the injury, and Cousins played OK for them late last year. It seems Cousins has always respected Kevin. Both sides have a decent option in their back pockets."

Cousins offers short-term stability

It isn't the worst idea. At least short-term.

Cousins, in his eight starts in 2025, had a 5-3 record, threw for 1,721 yards, 10 touchdowns, and five interceptions.

With Cousins starting, the Falcons at least won't be struggling to find a quarterback. Kirk has been there and done it for over a decade.

He can keep the ship afloat until Penix Jr. Is fully healthy again. Plus, with Stefanski, Cousins has an offensive mind at the helm.

Granted, it isn't the best situation for Falcons fans, but it might be the best they're going to get.
