Why Behren Morton isn't playing today for Texas Tech with injury news, updated depth chart status image

The Texas Tech Red Raiders aren't expected to have a hugely difficult task on their hands Saturday against scuffling Oklahoma State.

But to get past the Cowboys, they'll have to again rely on a quarterback other than Behren Morton.

The Raiders will be starting Will Hammond for the second consecutive week, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel.

Hammond was the starter a week ago when Texas Tech fell 26-22 to Arizona State. He went 22-for-37 passing for 167 yards and two touchdowns, and he added 47 rushing yards and another TD. The redshirt freshman has seen plenty of action this season as Morton has dealt with multiple injuries.

Why isn't Behren Morton playing today?

Behren Morton continues to recover from a leg injury.

According to Thamel, Morton is available to play in Saturday's game against Oklahoma State. That makes it sound like he'll be the possible backup to Hammond if a change is needed in the other direction.

Morton has had a great season, completing 68.4% of his passes for 1,501 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Texas Tech's schedule gets tougher after Oklahoma State.

On Nov. 1, they travel to Kansas State.

On Nov. 8, ranked BYU comes to town to take on the Red Raiders.

Tech likely recognizes that they need Morton at full strength for those games, and will hope Hammond can take care of business against Oklahoma State in the meantime.
