The Texas Tech Red Raiders have often grabbed the attention of college football fans this season thanks to their superb defense, led by linebacker Jacob Rodriguez.

But they're just as dangerous because of their passing attack, which is led by quarterback Behren Morton.

This season, Morton has completed 67.0% of his passes for 2,643 yards with 22 touchdowns and only four interceptions.

He's done it while playing with one of the most unique first names in college football: Behren.

As you'd expect, there's a good reason for that name.

Why is Texas Tech QB named Behren Morton?

Behren Morton is named after Jerry Behrens.

Behrens was a lineman at West Texas State (now West Texas A&M) and a long-time high school coach in Texas.

Morton's father, James, was helped through a difficult time by Behrens.

According to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, James lost his first wife in 1991.

"He was there for me during some tough times when I was in Friona," James Morton told the Avalanche Journal, "and was always there and kind of helped me early on as a coach. He was an old hard-nosed ball coach. He was an O-line guy, so he was just a guy I kind of gravitated to and always knew I could pick up some wisdom."

Morton, the son of James and Suni, has Bascom as his middle name as something passed down through the family. His parents wanted alliteration for his first name.

Thus, the callback to Jerry Behrens' positive influence on James Morton's life, and now a star college QB named Behren Bascom Morton.
