Texas Tech’s McGuire says it’s not about the tortillas, it’s about defending home turf image

Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire turned his weekly press conference into a rallying cry ahead of Saturday’s sellout night game against Kansas. “I’m excited to be back home,” McGuire said. “This game is huge. Kansas should be 6-0. Their quarterback is the real deal, their receiver leads the Big 12 in yardage, and they’ve got two legit tight ends.”

McGuire called on Red Raider Nation to help tilt the game’s energy. “It’s not about throwing tortillas,” he said. “When that defense, which is the best defense in the country takes the field, stand up, get loud.” He described Jones AT&T as the difference-maker: “We can create real problems with how loud we are. I’ve never experienced a louder crowd than at Utah, but I know our fans are more passionate.”

He admitted the team’s biggest hurdle has been self-inflicted. “We are the most penalized team in the Big 12 and that’s on me,” he said. “Pre-snap penalties have killed us in the red zone. We’re walking in on plays, then we move. We’ve got to become more disciplined.”

As for the bigger picture, McGuire said the Red Raiders haven’t come close to their ceiling. “I think we could’ve scored 60 the other night,” he said. “We’ve got a lot left in us.” And he made it clear what kind of energy he expects when the Jayhawks arrive: “This is the biggest game I’ve coached in since I’ve been at Texas Tech.”
