While Texas Tech’s immediate focus is locked on Miami and the Orange Bowl on New Year’s Day, the Red Raiders aren’t waiting until the confetti falls to think about what comes next. In fact, the most important storyline of Texas Tech’s future may already be unfolding, and it starts at quarterback.
With starting quarterback Behren Morton graduating and backup Will Hammond still rehabbing a torn ACL, the Red Raiders enter the offseason without a clear answer under center. For a program with postseason aspirations and a recent history of aggressive roster moves, that uncertainty almost certainly points toward the transfer portal.
Texas Tech has never been shy about shopping for a playmaker when the situation calls for it, and this year’s portal class is loaded with high-profile names. Florida’s DJ Lagway, Arizona State’s Sam Leavitt, and Nebraska’s Dylan Raiola have all been linked to various programs — Texas Tech included. Raiola, in particular, has been loosely connected to the Red Raiders in recent weeks.
But despite the buzz, Raiola may not be the most realistic or logical target for Texas Tech. Instead, the Red Raiders could be zeroing in on a quarterback who fits both the timeline and the offensive identity of Joey McGuire’s program: former Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Sorsby.
Sorsby officially entered the transfer portal on Monday while awaiting feedback on his NFL draft grade. Even with that decision still looming, interest around him has already surged. It’s easy to see why. Sorsby is one of the most complete quarterbacks available, a true dual-threat who accounted for nearly 3,400 total yards last season. He threw for 2,800 yards and added 580 more on the ground, consistently stressing defenses in multiple ways.
Beyond the numbers, Sorsby proved he can lead. He guided Cincinnati through an impressive season and thrived in an offense that values tempo, versatility, and quarterback mobility, all staples of Texas Tech’s system. From a football standpoint alone, the fit makes sense.
But recruiting is rarely just about football.
There’s another factor that makes this prediction feel more than speculative. Sorsby’s girlfriend recently announced her commitment to Texas Tech as a member of the Red Raiders’ volleyball program. And as anyone who follows recruiting closely knows, relationships matter. In fact, they often matter more than depth charts or NIL figures ever will.
If there’s one constant in college football recruiting, it’s this: girlfriends are elite recruiters.

With the positional need, schematic fit, and personal ties aligning, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Texas Tech move quickly, and quietly, to secure Sorsby’s commitment. Should that happen, he would immediately position himself as the favorite to lead the Red Raiders in 2026.
Landing Sorsby would be a significant win for Texas Tech, signaling both stability and ambition at the most important position on the field. As the Red Raiders look to build on their recent success and push toward another playoff run, this is exactly the type of move that keeps a program moving forward.
The Orange Bowl may be the present, but Brendan Sorsby could very well be the future in Lubbock.
