Texas Tech has been the subject of many headlines this past offseason. Due to the money they spent creating the number 1 transfer portal class in the nation this past spring.

Thanks to the Matador Club NIL Collective, the chess pieces are in place. Although they will be without one key piece in USC transfer running back, Quinten Joyner, because of a torn ACL two weeks before the season.

A lot of the national media have questioned whether this nearly 28-million-dollar roster will work, mainly because it has never been done before, putting Texas Tech in a unique position.

Joey McGuire could find himself calling West Texas home longer if the season pans out right.

Head Coach Joey McGuire and the Red Raiders are coming off a disappointing 8-5 season, which included a Liberty Bowl loss to Arkansas. He showed promise in his inaugural season with the team, leading them to a victory against Ole Miss in the Texas Bowl in 2023, but the journey has been lackluster since then.

With the addition of Mack Leftwich, former Texas State offensive coordinator, the Red Raiders aim to maintain the same offense productivity they had last year, scoring 37.4 points per game and ranking 4th in the nation. Additionally, adding Shiel Wood, a former Houston defensive coordinator, who hopes to revive the defense after they allowed 452.9 yards per game, ranking them 120th in the nation. The coordinators are set for the upcoming challenge this season.

McGuire has been given the tools that he needs to succeed. In a year where it feels like it's anybody's conference in the Big 12, the Red Raiders are primed to be contenders to win the Big 12 and even get into the College Football Playoff.

McGuire's contract doesn't end until 2028, but he could be looking at a big payday if expectations are met.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders are set to face Arkansas-Pine Bluff this Saturday in their season opener.
