ESPN’s College GameDay is headed to Lubbock, Texas on Saturday for a top-10 Big 12 showdown between No. 7 BYU and No. 8 Texas Tech. And for the Red Raiders, it’s bringing back one of their greatest all-time players to serve as the Celebrity Guest Picker.
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will return to his alma mater as this week’s guest picker, joining the GameDay crew live from Jones AT&T Stadium.
“Come on now, you know @PatrickMahomes had to come back to Lubbock to be this weekend’s guest picker,” the show’s official social media accounts announced Friday morning.

Mahomes, a 2017 first-round NFL Draft pick, remains one of the most iconic figures in Texas Tech football history. From 2014 to 2016, he threw for 11,252 yards and 93 touchdowns, completing 63.5% of his passes and averaging a school-record 351.6 passing yards per game. In the NFL, he’s become one of the sport’s biggest stars, winning two league MVPs and three Super Bowl MVP awards with the Chiefs.
Mahomes’ return comes a year after unveiling his “Gladiator” logo, developed through his partnership with Adidas, on Texas Tech's uniforms.
“Seeing my own logo on the Texas Tech uniform I put so much blood, sweat, and tears in is one of the most meaningful off-field accomplishments of my career,” Mahomes said. “I want to thank the three-stripe family for giving me this one-of-a-kind opportunity.”
Mahomes becomes the 10th guest picker of the GameDay season, joining previous guests including Trae Young, Jelly Roll, Sabrina Ionescu, and Alex Smith. Seven of the nine prior pickers have posted winning records so far this year.
