The Texas A&M Aggies have taken the national stage on Saturday as part of the College Football Playoff's opening round, hosting the Miami Hurricanes.

The Aggies enter the tournament as the 7-seed out of the 12 qualifying teams.

Out of the SEC, Texas A&M is coached by Mike Elko, formerly of Duke. Their quarterback is the dual-threat Marcel Reed.

And each time they play, fans are curious about those letters at the end of their school name.

What does A&M stand for in Texas A&M?

A&M in Texas A&M stands for Agricultural and Mechanical.

According to the Texas A&M University website, it doesn't actually stand for anything anymore, but the letters "are a symbolic link to the school's past."

A number of other schools are also A&M, and in each of these instances they stand for those same two words.

What's an Aggie?

An Aggie comes from that A&M abbreviation.

Aggie is short for that agricultural aspect of the A&M.

Texas A&M and UC Davis are two Division I teams known as the Aggies.
