December is right around the corner and with that comes the next open Transfer Portal window. After giving up a 30-3 lead and eventually losing to No. 3 Texas A&M, Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer responded to rumors about his starting quarterback.
LaNorris Sellers came into the 2025 season as a media darling for the upcoming NFL Draft. Alongside names like Arch Manning, Cade Klubnik, and Garrett Nussmeier, Sellers is among a shortlist of names that needed a great 2025 to realize those expectations.
South Carolina, thought to be a fringe playoff contender prior to the season, has not fared well. They have a 3-7 record and even more surprisingly are only 1-7 in conference. South Carolina is currently second to last in the SEC standings. Even behind Florida and Auburn who have both recently fired their coaches.
As for Sellers, the production isn’t bad, but it's also not within range of ‘good’ either. Currently Sellers does not rank in the top 50 of passing leaders in yards, completion percentage, touchdowns, or rating. While Sellers is the third leading rusher on the team, even those numbers lack top end efficiency. 129 carries for 186 yards but only a 1.4 yards per carry average.
Sellers has options in 2026
Sellers, while not having a great season, has great options. Sellers has remaining eligibility. Had Sellers experienced a great season, and South Carolina was in the playoff mix, or even at least the in the running in the SEC, he very well could have made the leap to the NFL. In November, that idea is no longer ideal.
Sellers other option is one that has been discussed for at least a month on social media and by various media outlets. That option is entering the transfer portal. An idea that Beamer is understandably not excited about. Either the reality of it, or that it is a topic of conversation.
Shane Beamer on rumors LaNorris Sellers could be leaving South Carolina:

"There's a bunch of absolute horse garbage that's on social media right now."
Others speculating online that Sellers will return:
"Hopefully, that's not horse garbage."

While Sellers has not made any public statements regarding transferring, there are reasons to consider it. According to 247 Sports, South Carolina currently ranks as the No. 21 recruiting class for 2026. While not bad, it's not high enough to suggest Sellers transferring should not even be an option.
While this entire conversation is happening within the context of rumors, very little can be deduced until Sellers himself makes some sort of decision regarding 2026.
The Miami Hurricanes have been a name floated rather consistently. Clemson could have an issue with the assumed loss of Cade Klubnik and with Dabo Swinney doubling down on his future with the program, Sellers could be a big transfer portal win.
As rumors circulate of former Penn State coach James Franklin negotiating with Virginia Tech, that could be another big splash opportunity for a coach in year one with a new program.
There has also been some online chatter about Sellers not entering the portal and returning to South Carolina despite their bleak season.
