Iron Skillet showdown: TCU and SMU clash in final rivalry matchup image

The 104th and final scheduled Battle for the Iron Skillet kicks off this weekend as TCU and SMU renew one of Texas’ most storied rivalries. With bragging rights and history on the line, both teams enter the matchup with plenty to prove.

TCU (2–0) has stormed out of the gates in 2025 with convincing wins over North Carolina and Abilene Christian. Quarterback Josh Hoover has been sharp, completing more than 76% of his passes with six touchdowns against just one interception. The Horned Frogs' balanced attack has also shown promise, highlighted by Kevorian Barnes’ 113-yard rushing performance against UNC. Through two games, TCU has racked up over 500 total yards per contest while holding opponents in check defensively.

On the other sideline, SMU (2–1) comes into the game looking to bounce back from a heartbreaking double-overtime loss to Baylor. Quarterback Kevin Jennings has led a steady offense, supported by a versatile rushing attack featuring T.J. Harden and Chris Johnson Jr. The Mustangs’ receiving corps, with Romello Brinson and Jalen Cooper, provides plenty of weapons to test TCU’s secondary. However, SMU’s defense remains a concern after surrendering more than 440 passing yards in that loss to the Bears.

The matchup will hinge on whether SMU can slow down Hoover and the Horned Frogs’ explosive passing game. If the Mustangs’ front can generate pressure and force turnovers, they’ll have a chance to keep things close. Conversely, TCU will look to establish the run early and exploit SMU’s vulnerable secondary.

Given the Horned Frogs’ offensive rhythm and defensive efficiency, they hold the edge entering Saturday’s rivalry clash. Still, rivalry games often defy predictions, and SMU has enough offensive firepower to make this an actual battle for the skillet.

In what could be the last meeting for the foreseeable future, the stage is set for one final chapter in this classic Texas rivalry. No matter the outcome, the 104th Battle for the Iron Skillet promises to deliver a fitting farewell to one of college football’s famous traditions.
